Work and Travel USA

Are you a full-time or part-time student at a university or vocational college, whether in-person or online, and want to make the most of your next summer? Work and Travel USA is a global program with a long history that lets you legally work in the U.S. on a J-1 visa, earn your own dollars, and even travel for a month after your job ends.

You’ll improve your English in a real-world setting, gain experience that will really stand out on your resume, earn great money, meet people from all over the world, check off half your bucket list, and create memories that will stay with you long after you return. In short, you’ll have a summer that will help you grow—professionally, linguistically, and personally.

And with support from Czech-us, you can be sure you won’t be on your own.

Registrations for summer 2027 are now open.

Why join the Work and Travel USA programme with Czech-us

JOB that suits you
  • Most of the positions are our own—we work directly with employers in the U.S., without intermediaries. We build our partnerships on long-standing personal relationships; we visit employers regularly and coordinate working conditions directly with them.
  • Your job and housing are guaranteed even before you leave — we’ll take care of everything together from the Czech Republic.
  • Financial contribution from the employer — our selected partners (so-called VIP employers) will contribute up to 32,690 CZK toward programme-related expenses, depending on the type of position and start date (the sooner you arrive, the more you’ll save). But don’t worry about missing out — there are approximately 200 spots available, and they’re still open even if you register in April.
  • We offer the best work destinations in the U.S.—Florida, California, Alaska, Myrtle Beach, the Washington, D.C., area, the NYC area, Long Island, Montana, Ocean City, Colorado, or Seattle. The choice is yours.
TRAVEL is an essential part
  • You can travel during the work portion of the program — do you have a day off work? It’s the perfect opportunity to go on a trip with your new friends.
  • You live out your (American) dreams — sports’ games or Broadway musicals? You can experience both.
  • Up to 30 days for traveling — after the work portion of the programme ends, you can stay in the U.S. and explore places all around the U.S.
  • Travel itineraries from our students — before you even leave, we’ll share tips on the most popular routes that won’t dissapoint you.
SUPPORT you can count on
  • We’ll help you choose the best employers — based on your preferences and experience. We’ll prepare you for your interview so you know what to expect, and we’ll boost your chances of success.
  • Comprehensive pre-departure preparation — we’ll advise you on how to smoothly navigate the immigration process and how to handle your first days in America without stress (jet lag, homesickness, first shopping trips).
  • Support throughout the summer — we’ll stay in touch with you from the moment you leave until you return home. And we might even meet in person — we regularly fly to the U.S. to visit our students.
  • Community and events for students — we organize meetups and events in the Czech Republic and in the U.S. so you can enjoy your summer to the fullest, and we’ll connect you with other Czechs and Slovaks in the programme.
ADMINISTRATION AND INSURANCE , stress-free
  • Leave all the administrative work to us — we’ll guide you through the entire process step by step. We’ll help you with all the forms (including the DS-2019), point out any potential risks, and recommend how to avoid them.
  • Thorough preparation for the embassy interview — we’ll advise you on how the interview works and what to prepare so that everything goes smoothly.
  • Health insurance included — your insurance is covered by the programme for the duration of your employment in the U.S.
BECAUSE IT'S US
  • You’ll benefit from more than 20 years of our experience — every year, we send hundreds of students to the U.S. on the Work and Travel programme. We’ve seen enough success stories — and enough mishaps — to be your most reliable partner.
  • We know what we’re talking about — all of our coordinators have gone through the programme themselves. We know what it’s like to be a working student overseas, and we understand how collaboration with American employers works.
  • We have offices in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland — we’re a local team with a strong presence in Central Europe. Thanks to this, we have a perfect understanding of local administrative processes.
  • For us, a “personal approach” isn’t just an empty phrase — we’re not an anonymous agency that just sends out instructions. Want some guidance? We’re here for you. We pour our hearts into our work. ❤️

Lifeguard, waiter, or national park guide?

You can choose from two program options:

The Lifeguard option means you’ll work as a lifeguard at a pool or at the beach. You’ll ensure guest safety and water quality while enjoying a summer full of sunshine and the authentic American lifestyle. You don’t need any prior experience — we’ll teach you everything, including first aid (which can come in handy in everyday life), in our lifeguard course.

Are you more interested in working at a hotel, restaurant, or perhaps in a national park? The “Other Jobs” option offers a wide range of positions across the United States. You’ll gain valuable experience for your resume and take your English to a whole new level.

Enough about work — what about traveling?

You don’t have to wait until the end of the work portion of the programme to start traveling. On your days off, you can go on a trip to explore the surrounding area — you might find yourself working in Washington, D.C., but spending the weekend in New York. Many students also fulfill specific dreams during the summer by attending NHL, NBA, baseball, or American football games, or even concerts and musicals on Broadway.

After the work portion of the programme ends, you’ll also have up to 30 days to travel. You can travel along the East or West Coast of the U.S., visit national parks or Niagara Falls, or venture further afield — to the Caribbean (the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands), South America (Peru, Brazil), Canada, or Alaska.

Before you leave, we’ll also share travel itineraries from our students who’ve traveled to these places before you, so you’ll know where to go and how to plan your trip as best as possible.

It sounds great, but I’m a little worried…

…that I’ll miss out on something back home: How about changing your perspective? You can bring your closest friends along (and even earn a bonus for it). Plus, the experiences of all our students speak for themselves: in the end, it’s usually those who stayed home who end up with FOMO, not the other way around.

… that I won’t pass my exams because of WAT: In all these years, we haven’t heard of anyone who didn’t make it. Professors often support their students in gaining experience abroad and allow them to take exams early — you just need to ask and make arrangements.

… I will be lonely: We’re going to debunk this myth, too. We’ll connect you with other students heading to the same employer, and you can travel to the U.S. together. We organize events in both the Czech Republic and the U.S., where new and former participants can meet. You’ll quickly realize that you’re part of a community and you’re not in this alone.

… because I’ve never been to the U.S.: Another reason to look forward to it! We’ll thoroughly prepare you for everything, and you can ask us anything at any time. If you’re unsure about the current situation in the U.S., we’ve prepared an overview of facts and answers to the most pressing questions. Plus, we’ve put together a detailed guide to Work and Travel USA, where you’ll learn what to do step by step after arriving in the U.S.
